Utilizing plows pulled by carabaos to signal the cultivation of Hacienda Luisita lands, striking Hacienda Luisita farm workers harrowed a part of sugar lands not in use in Barangay Balete in June 2005. Cash crops such as corn and vegetables have been planted in over 2,000 hectares of Hacienda Luisita lands while waiting for the Supreme Court decision on the ownership of the over 5,000 farm workers. The Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program CARP cover 4,195 hectares of land inside Hacienda Luisita for more than 5,000 farm workers. At less than one hectare each, the harvests of the farm workers last long for their families to remain alive. Due to this and the rice crisis, the Unites Luisita Workers Union Ulwu is giving courage to its members to cultivate more lands to plant rice besides cash crops. While the more than 5,000 farm workers of the very great in size sugarcane plantation Hacienda Luisita were not utilized to planting rice and planting rice is never fun, they would get skill in it without difficulty if they would carry on performing it. To remedy the shortage in National Food Authority NFA rice, planting rice in sugarcane plantation is especially suitable to the time. Via Inquirer.net |
