The New Container Terminal-1 (NTC-1) in the Subic Bay Freeport formally began operation last April 2 by receiving the first shipment of cargoes from Kaohsiung, Taiwan brought by MV Eagle Excellence, a 1,200-TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) container ship operated by the American President Lines Ltd. (APL).This new container terminal is of international standards and its operation is hoped to speed up the growth of businesses and trade opportunities in Central Luzon as well as in the northern regions. The NCT-1 has a cargo-handling volume of 300 TEUs and the NCT-2, which was inaugurated by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last April 9, has a cargo-handling volume of 300,000 TEUs. The $215-million container facility was newly constructed partly with funding from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and is believed to promote enthusiastically Subic's attempt to reach the state of a maritime service and logistics center. We hope the two new container terminals, the NCT-1 and the NCT-2, will accelerate the progressive development of businesses and trade chances in Central Luzon and will help Subic to promote its attempt to become a major center of activity for maritime service and logistics. |
