In cooperation with Asian Productivity Organization (APO), and the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), International School of Sustainable Tourism (ISST) in Subic organized the Second National Conference on Community-based Rural Tourism.

Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim, who served as keynote speaker, tackled the role of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in developing rural tourism.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) administrator Armand Arreza welcomed some 400 representatives from national line agencies, local government units, tourism organizations, travel agency owners and operators, tour and hotel and resorts operators, and other key players in the tourism.

According to former DOT secretary Mina Gabor, ISST chairperson, to enhance the participants’ knowledge about the concept of rural tourism as a strategy for creating economic opportunities in rural areas; and to familiarize the participants with the best practices in management of selected models of rural tourism enterprises, which may be promoted and adopted in Philippine provinces.

The event is expected to promote the development of community-based and tourism-oriented establishments as a way of optimizing the utilization and productivity of resources in rural areas, to boost local employment, and to offer an equally great potential in alleviating poverty in rural areas.

If rural tourism program will be pushed through, it would be of great help to create jobs at home and in local communities. [via pia.gov.ph]
