The government of Pampanga province has approved the P9.5 million resources for bamboo livelihood and expansion projects. Lilia Pineda, Pampanga Governor, conducted a meeting with Vice-Governor Joseller Guiao, and representatives of various business sectors last July 19, 2010. They discussed about the reconstitution of the Pampanga Bamboo Development Council (PBDC). They had approved the immediate planting of bamboo plants in the province. According to Guiao, the Pampanga Agricultural College (PAC) has devoted to administer the planting of some 6,000 bamboo propagules this rainy season. The planting of the bamboo propagules will be from August to September of this year. The political leaders of Pampanga want to guarantee the success of the bamboo development project which shall not merely promote livelihood opportunities, but shall also serve as a lessening measure for climate change, disaster and shortage.

To make the project possible, Vice-Gov. Guiao commanded the support of all concerned council members and other members and stakeholders to prevent unnecessary hindrance in the execution of the project. The budget officials of the province confirmed that P3.5 million is alloted for the acquisition of bamboo propagules. Another P3.5 million from the unexpended balance will be given. Also P2.5 million from the 20 percent development fund is also allotted in the project, for a total of P9.5M. Second District Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo also joined them in the launching of the bamboo village in Sta. Catalina in Lubao town. During the launching activity last July 12, the 24-hectare-bamboo village has been planted with 580 bamboo seedlings, while 400 bamboo cuttings are housed in its garden centre. The Cottage Industry and Technology Center of the DTI gave training to 40 persons regarding primary bamboo processing and nursery management.  DTI Regional Director Blesila Lantayona oriented the attendees of the meeting on the significant points of the Executive Order 879 which makes the Philippine Bamboo Development Council (PBDC) updated. Lantayona added that Pampanga is the foremost among Central Luzon’s seven provinces to form and organize a bamboo development council. [via mb.com.ph]
