SBMA will start to position itself as a standard port for international luxury cruise ships. The Freeport zone had joined the Asia Cruise Terminal Association (ACTA) formed last July together with other business partners in China, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Taiwan. The Singapore Cruise Centre Pte Ltd., the only cruise and ferry port operator in Singapore, is the organizer of the project. The launching will be in January 2011. This is a strategic move for the organization as part of our efforts to build a solid business network with member countries. Major players in the luxury cruise industry like Star Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Silversea Cruises, and Costa Crocere S.p.A. have invited by SBMA to be a part of this project SBMA Administrator Armand Arreza said. Ivan Ng, Singapore Cruise Centre Vice-President, said that in the middle of some ports in the Philippines, Subic Freeport was chosen because of its promptness to serve the cruise business. SBMA will be one of the founding members of ACTA because of its deep natural harbor, tourism sites, sufficient physical security, and up to date port infrastructure and support facilities. Raul Marcelo, SBMA deputy administrator for tourism, said that Singapore Cruise Centre handles 9 million passengers per annum. This will serve as the model for SBMA to set up a cruise service based in this free port.
