Educator's Brain Drain

Written by Ma. Christina G. Luna

As defined by Wikipedia, Brain Drain is the large-scale emigration of individuals with technical skills or knowledge due to conflict, lack of opportunity, political or health risks.

Nowadays, the government is taking measures to prevent professionals from leaving our country. For an instance, the salary increase of government employees. But despite its efforts, Filipinos still opt to work abroad. Why?

As a teacher, I know the reason why my colleagues want to work out of the country and end up doing jobs that are not supposed to be their jobs (being domestic helpers, chambermaids, factory workers). And that is, they want to to provide a better life for their families. Although there has been some improvements in the salary of school teachers, especially those in the public schools, teachers remain underpaid. As a matter of fact, teachers are one of the lowest paid professionals in our country. The sa;ary of a teacher is not even enough to provide for the necessities of a family of five, especially when there are children to send to college. To make ends meet, teachers resort to leaving their jobs and finding greener pastures in the foreign land where they could receive in the Philippines.

Now, I am still hoping that someday, Filipinos would no longer leave and to work out of the country. I want to see Filipinos where they truly belong - the Philippines.
