To answer energy problems in neighbouring communities and to lessen the cost of power in the Freeport, SBMA (Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority) approved the $75-million wind energy project proposed by China-based Sunnew Investments Ltd.SBMA Administrator Armand Arreza unveiled that Sunnew-Subic has proposed to construct a total of 25 wind turbines in the Subic Bay Freeport, with the project covering a total area of 50,000 square meters at both the Mt. Sta. Rita and the Redondo Peninsula sites.
The two parties, Arreza and Sunnew Investments chairman Lee Yin Hung, signed the 50-year lease contract for the proposed investment. The wind to be harvested in the said wind energy project is expected to be abundant since the prospected locations will be facing the South China Sea, which have strong wind currents all year round. According to Lee of Sunnew SBMA and neighbouring communities will benefit a lot in this wind energy project. Such benefits are: release the pressure of the power demand in the region and help realize the era of renewable energy in the country. The project will produce about 50 megawatts (MW) of power by 2012, and will initially provide work for 103 workers. Presently, Sunnew Investments is already operating same wind energy project in Taiwan and China and is planning to expand in Australia, United States, and Vietnam. [via sbma.com] |
