Farmers from the province of Nueva Ecija proved that the El Niño phenomenon is no match with their resourcefulness.Since the country is presently experiencing the effect of the El Niño phenomenon, they find an alternative of how will they surpass the effect of this phenomenon in their farm. One of these alternatives was used by a mechanical engineer turned farmer from Barangay San Juan, Rolando Acain. Acain was one quoted as one of the model farmers during the Grand Harvest Festival held in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and hybrid seed producer SL-8H Agritech. He was also noted for using the proper use of irrigation water. With the use of SL-8H and with the new techniques in farming, Acain harvests 11 to 12 tons or 221 cavans of rice grains a hectare, a large advantage over the traditional farming which is five to six tons only. SL-8H rice breed consumes more fertilizer but not too much water so it is still worth since it increases the harvests up to 100%. SL-8H rice plus modern techniques in farming, El Niño phenomenon can now be considered a non- event in Nuueva Ecija. [via manilatimes.net] |
