In response to the increasing maternal deaths in the area of Aurora compared with the rest of central Luzon, the P595.13 million grant agreement has recently signed by the governments of the Philippines and Japan for the expansion of the Aurora Memorial Hospital (AMH) in Baler, Aurora province.Once again the strong bilateral relations between the governments of Japan and the Philippines have been demonstrated with the said agreement. Present in the signing of agreement are Acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary and National Economic and Development Authority Director General Augusto Santos, who served as the representative of the Philippines. Meanwhile, Norio Matsuda, Philippine Office chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, signed for Japan. The project is expected to improve the delivery of medical and health-care services in Aurora province through the construction of an all-new hospital complex and purchase of modern medical-care equipment. In addition, the development of AMH will turn it to be a teaching hospital that will be leaded by the UP Manila School of Health Sciences (UPM-SHS), which will be offering midwifery and BS Nursing courses soon. The project aims to boost the number of medical and health professionals in Aurora and nearby provinces, as well as the hospital's bed capacity. It also aims to inspire other LGUs to be creative in exploring ways of improving the quality of life of their respective constituents like what is showed by the local government of Aurora and UP.
