Because of the planned transfer of the US naval base from Okinawa, Japan to Guam, there will be a $15 billion US military naval project in Guam and Filipino contractors will be needed to have a bid with this big project. Olongapo Mayor James Gordon Jr. announced this opportunity to all Filipino manpower companies and suppliers to meet important decision makers.Last February 18-21, bids were submitted during the Annual Pacific Island Local Government Conference hosted by the city. Dean Alegado, APILG Executive Director, stated that about 1,500 contractors already filled up the bidding process wherein 50 from them are Filipino-owned companies. Early biddings were done in Washington, Honolulu and Guam. We are aware that most products are imported in Guam. According to Gordon, the Phils. can supply the country because they do not manufacture. At least 20,000 workers will be needed to build the naval base. The construction of the base will start this year and will end in 2014. Some 14,200 US servicemen and their 38,070 dependents from the former base in Okinawa will start working from 2012 and will be ended by 2016. The American firms will be the competitors of Filipino contractors since the naval project in Guam will be paid by US taxes. The naval base project will also hire skilled workers, medical practitioners and the like. The APILG meeting will depict contractors from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Belau, the American Samoa, Hawaii, and Guam.
