Bulacan began with small fishing settlements along the shore of Manila Bay and enlarged with the interior or inland part with the coming of the Spaniards. Bulacan was one of the first eight provinces to take arms against Spain throughout the duration of the revolution of 1896. It was one of the provinces that supported the Katipunan. After the establishment of a democratic government, the capital of the Philippines was transferred from Bacoor, Cavite to Malolos, Bulacan.
It was in Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan where the first Congress assembled and drafted the Constitution of the First Philippine Republic. This constitution was ratified on September 29, 1898.When the Americans founded a civil government in the Philippines, they held the country’s first election in the town of Baliuag in the province of Bulacan on May 6, 1899, but Bulacan was just made into a province on March 10, 1917 under Republic Act Number 2711.
