To improve vegetable production in Balanga town, a public-private partnership has been formed in a bid among the Provincial Agrarian Reform Office, Dinalupihan municipal government, East West Seed Co. (EWSC), and Ligas Kooperatibang Bayan sa Pagpapaunlad (LKBPI), and Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Bataan.

Norma Evangelista, Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Bataan personnel, said that the partnership aspires to give local farmers financial assistance and educate them with scientific and environment-friendly technologies to generate quality crops.

Municipal officials here said the partnership sits well with the vision of making Dinalupihan the vegetable trading center of Bataan considering its strategic location and vast agricultural lands suitable for vegetable production.

Meanwhile, Balanga City agriculturist Nerissa Mateo said the city government has already been conducting backyard vegetable farming in barangays to make idle backyard areas productive and augment income of local folks, the project is called Kasama Ani sa Barangay (Kaanib).

The municipality of Mariveles also started a program that promotes vegetable farming in barangays and schools, called "Programang Pang-Agrikultura Gabay sa Isang Barangay Isang Gulay."

This project is a very good opportunity for the farmers to improve their economic condition. The challenge lies on how well farmers will grow and develop the vegetables enough to compete even with the international market and high-end buyers. [via businessmirror.com.ph]
