Casecnan Multipurpose Irrigation

Nueva Ecija
Friday, 02 February 2007

The opening of the Phase I of the Casecnan Multipurpose Irrigation and Power Project (CMIPP) was celebrated by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on January 3, 2007. This phase involves irrigation canals and other constructions of the Lateral-A headgate in Barangay Magtanggol that will supply with water the first ten thousand hectares of farmlands in the Science City of Muñoz reaching to town of Guimba. Both are located in Nueva Ecija.

The irrigation project will stimulate economic growth and development in the North Luzon Agribusiness Quadrangle composed of Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley Region, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and the northern part of Central Luzon. The irrigation constituent of Casecnan Dam is a big super region project.

The Phase II of the project includes the construction of an irrigation canal that will open an extra sixteen thousand hectares of farmlands from the town of Guimba all the way to the town of Victoria in the province of Tarlac.

In addition to its irrigation part, the CMIPP project involves the construction of about six hundred kilometers of road dikes and farm-to-market roads, and the restoration to a good condition of damaged irrigation structures serving some fifty-five thousand hectares.

Irrigation is very important to farmers during a long period of dry weather, especially throughout the course of El Niño phenomenon particularly in the highlands.
