Baler, the capital town of the province of Aurora, displays and protects the rare plants and animals it cultivates. It is habitat to the Millenium Tree-the oldest balete tree in Asia. A wild duhat (Sygium balerense) and rattan (Calamus balerensis) are two plant species that have been given names after Baler. The book of Baler, authored by Senator Edgardo J. Angara, got the National Book Award for Travel in the 27th National Book Awards brought before the public by the National Book Development Board and the Manila Critics Circle in cooperation with the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts at the Yuchengco Museum. Baler is only one hour journey by plane and without delay it would not be more than four hours to the journey by land. Let us respond favourably to its invitation by visiting it for it is not very far. Baler is just 232 kilometres from Manila. |
