PhilRice (Philippine Rice Research Institute) has issued a warning against bacterial diseases which attack rice farms as a result of non-stop rains. One of theses diseases is the bacterial Leaf Streak (BLS). It is less invasive and popular than Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) but it is more prevalent when it rains non-stop. According to Dr. Hoai Xuan Truong, its symptoms are almost similar to BLB. A pronounced mass of rustic yellow color above the canopy is a sign of BLS infestation. The following are the suggested preventions: - Maintain good drainage.
- Plant resistant varieties.
- When copper-based fungicide is taken; apply it before 40-50 DAS.
PhilRice Plant breeders are continuing to develop lines resistant to blast, BLB and other rice diseases using both conventional and biotechnology approaches. [via PIA] |
